CEC demands that elections be held on June 7

The Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Kreshnik Radoniçi, said that the process of organizing new elections is not easy, therefore he requests that the elections be held on June 7.

"The Constitutional Court has set two dates for holding the elections, May 31 or June 7, so in our opinion it is June 7, but let it still be up to the president," he said after the meeting he held with the acting president of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu.

He said that the CEC is requesting as much time as possible to prepare for new elections, which should be held after the dissolution of the tenth legislature, which failed to elect a new president on April 28, within the constitutional deadline.

Radoniqi was asked if they had discussed the budget that the CEC needs to organize the elections. He said no, but added that "I believe it will be approximately the same as in the past elections."

The last parliamentary elections, held on December 28, 2025, cost Kosovo about 7 million euros.

Since this year is not a regular election year, the CEC will have to approach the Government to request a budget for organizing the elections.

The MPs had until April 28 to elect a new president, and according to the Constitutional Court's ruling, after the failure, the Assembly was immediately dissolved.

The elections, meanwhile, must be held within 45 days.

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu now has ten days to consult with political parties on the two election dates: May 31 and June 7, and within this period to announce the elections.

These will be the third parliamentary elections in less than a year and a half to be held in Kosovo.
