Belgium started the 2022 World Cup with a minimal victory as they beat Canada 1-0, in a challenge where the "red devils" struggled a lot to secure the three points and top the group.

Despite the sub-optimal form it has shown recently and the absences, a dominant Belgium against the North Americans was expected. But the Canadians almost pulled off a surprise when they quickly won a penalty. However, Courtua managed to save Alfonso Devis' penalty kick, keeping the goal intact.

The Canadians looked for more attacking play, but it was the Belgians who came through with a long ball that Batshuaj made the most of to power the ball into the net late in the first half.

In the second half of the game, Canada dictated more of its pace, trying to find space. But Belgium defended well and expertly finished the challenge with a narrow 1-0 victory, taking the top of the group alone.
