Why does Germany wear white jerseys, even though it's not on their flag

Have you ever wondered why Germany wear white jerseys, despite it not being a color in their country's flag?

There are few national teams more iconic than the Germans, especially when it comes to the World Cup, a tournament that rarely fails to make it to the final stages.

Of course, they failed to get past the group stage four years ago, succumbing to the reigning champions' curse, and their shock opening loss to Japan last week made it look like it could happen again.

However, prior to 2018, they had reached the semi-finals for at least the previous four tournaments and when there were two group stages, it was the previous time they had not reached at least the quarter-finals.

As well as the team being iconic, so are their shirts, with their classic white usually combined with a beautiful pattern, with their famous shirt from 1990, when they became champions for the third time, one of all time classics of the World.

Unlike England, Belgium, Holland, USA, Cameroon and many others, Germany's jerseys have nothing to do with their country's flag.

The European country uses a tricolor flag of red, black and yellow, but they don't play in any of those colors, instead opting for white.

This is due to the color of the Prussian flag, the state that stretched from the modern border of Russia to the border of France in the west.

The area known as the German empire had a white flag, originally with a cross in the middle, later replaced by the black eagle that still adorns their team crest.

When the German football team was formed in 1899, they decided to adopt the Prussian colors, keeping them even after the Kingdom of Prussia ended nearly two decades later.
