They set up a trap, the basketball player kills the student

Mike Peake, a New Mexico State University basketball player, has been hospitalized after being shot on the Las Cruces campus.

The shooting, which happened early Saturday morning, killed 19-year-old student Brandon Travis.

According to the police report, “Brandon Travis conspired with a 17-year-old girl and two other individuals, all UNM students, to lure and then assault the victim (basketball player) on the UNM campus and attacked him.”

During the altercation, shots were fired, which resulted in the death of Brandon Travis and the wounding of basketball player Mike Peake, whose name neither the University nor the Police initially wanted to release.

“We know that one of our student athletes is now in the hospital after an altercation on the UNM campus. We also know that another person died as a result of the crash," New Mexico State University said in a statement.

The Sun-News reported that the basketball player injured in the shooting is Mike Peake, who was taken to an Albuquerque hospital and is in stable condition.

Peake reacted during the attack by killing one of the students. The game between New Mexico State and New Mexico was suspended.
