In a meeting held today in Geneva between the Minister of Health and Social Protection Ogerta Manastirliu and the Director General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, discussed the importance of addressing the challenges brought by the pandemic, such as emergency preparedness, investments in health systems, mental health issues, and continuing education of medical staff.

"The training and education of human resources through joint programs between countries is one of the mechanisms that can be part of an active communication platform to strengthen human resources in health. We are interested in participating in the ongoing training and education initiative for nurses with the aim of increasing the capacity and quality standards of nursing care", said Manastirliu, during the meeting with the Director General of the World Health Organization.

Speaking about services at the primary level for mental health issues in the post-pandemic period, the Minister of Health and Social Protection spoke about the implementation of a concrete strategy in primary care.

"We have opened the first 50 socio-health centers and we intend to expand them with 50 more centers within the year, increasing citizens' access to primary care centers for mental health problems", she said.

The General Director of WHO Dr. Tedros praised the progress made by Albania to increase access to health services for mental health issues.

"Mental health is the biggest challenge, especially with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, so it is important to increase access to mental health services," said Dr. Tedros.

The meeting between the Minister of Health and Social Protection Ogerta Manastirliu and the General Director of WHO dr. Tedros Adhanom, took place within the framework of the 76th Assembly of the World Health Organization, which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, with the participation of policy makers, experts and representatives of health institutions, where the challenges of health systems, the impact of pandemic in the health of the population and the need to join forces and strengthen capacities, to guarantee preparation and rapid response to health emergencies as well as the role of technology and innovation in access to health services./ CNA.al
