Illegal trade against works of art / Europol arrests 60 people

Police arrested 60 people and recovered 11,049 stolen works of art as part of an international crackdown on the illegal art trade in 14 European countries, Europol announced today.

The operation, called Pandora VII, was led by the Spanish Civil Guard, with support from Europol and Interpol.

As stated in Europol's statement, in the operational phase between September 13 and 24 last year, several thousand checks were carried out at airports, ports and border points, as well as at auction houses, museums and private homes.

During the two weeks of cyber patrols, 8,495 internet checks were carried out and around 130 investigations worldwide are still ongoing, the European Police Service added in a statement.

As part of Operation Pandora VII, a large number of stolen art objects were recovered, including 77 ancient books from an Italian monastery, a Roman marble bust of a woman believed to represent Salonia Matidia, the emperor Trajan's granddaughter, 3,073 coins of ancient, while the Romanian Police seized 117 Dacian and Roman coins looted from the archaeological site.

Europol said Portuguese authorities had recovered 48 religious sculptures and other artefacts, most likely linked to a series of 15 church robberies in northern Portugal between 1992 and 2003.

The Greek police confiscated 41 religious and liturgical objects, while 13 archaeological objects from the Russian Federation were confiscated in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Bosnia and Herzegovina took part in the action, while Europol provided analytical and operational support. 

Operation Pandora is an annual action that was launched for the first time in 2016 and is implemented within the framework of the European Multidisciplinary Platform against Criminal Threats (EMPACT).
