"We are reviewing the defense strategy"/ Vengu: In 2026 we will add

Defense Minister Pirro Vengu declared today that in 2026, artillery systems and the first anti-aircraft systems will be added to security and defense after a long absence.

In a press conference, Vengu said that Albania is preparing the strategic review of Defense.

"Peace and stability are not forever, on the contrary, they require daily investments and preparations. The new reality is often embodied in the review of strategic defense documents, where Albania itself is preparing the strategic defense review.

All these reviews highlight a fragmentation of the international order and the permanent competition that structures in some way a kind of new cold war. Why do I mention this? Because South-Eastern Europe, despite not being the epicenter of the new global rivalry, is not an invisible periphery either. It is a secondary theater, not for tanks, but for influences, narratives, disinformation and hybrid interventions.

The 2026 budget is not a routine budget, but a mechanism to build real capacities, to develop industry, to strengthen digital sovereignty and to build Albania as a stable ally in NATO. This year we reach the value of 2.12 of GDP and if we compare it with the 2025 budget we have an increase of 12%.

We aim to reach NATO levels in 2029. The salary increase will be progressive, 60-70% for basic salaries and 30% for the highest levels of command. We also aim to increase the active component by 30%. Last year we had 721 new recruits. The Academy of the Armed Forces is the focal point of this policy. The year 2026 will create a better legal framework. We have an influx of returnees to the Armed Forces and now the Armed Forces is a force that attracts more and more. We have a return to air readiness, a return to helicopter readiness. In the naval force we have an increase in the fleet.

 We have 2 vehicles that have been added to us and a new vehicle comes with an investment of 9 million euros from Italian allies. We will present the Javelin systems next week. In 2026 we will add artillery systems and the first anti-aircraft systems after a long absence", said Vengu. /CNA
