The head of the DP group, Gazment Bardhi, has reacted to the changes to the Criminal Code discussed in the marathon parliamentary session.

According to Bardhi, European standards for freedom of expression and OSCE-ODIHR reports require Albania to decriminalize the criminal offenses of insult and defamation, considering them only civil violations.

Bardhi emphasizes that this measure is important for guaranteeing freedom of expression, especially for the media and civil society activists.

He underlined that the opposition supports the full decriminalization of criminal offenses of defamation/insult, as well as the reform of civil rules for this violation according to European standards.

"European standards on freedom of expression and OSCE-ODIHR reports require Albania to decriminalize the criminal offenses of insult and defamation, considering them only civil violations."

This measure is important for guaranteeing freedom of expression, especially for the media and civil society activists.

Today, there are a full 77 journalists in Albania who are facing defamation charges from politicians or former prosecutors/judges dismissed by vetting.

This poses a real risk to freedom of expression and the safety of journalists.

For this reason, the opposition supports the full decriminalization of criminal offenses of defamation/insults, and we support the reform of civil rules for this violation according to European standards," Bardhi declared./ CNA
