Global shock/ The attack on Brazilian institutions is condemned

World leaders reacted with shock and dismay to the attack on Brazil's Congress, Supreme Court and presidential palace by thousands of supporters of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.

The rebels refuse to accept Bolsonaro's defeat in the last election.

The former president has not made a public statement explicitly admitting that he lost.

In a tweet addressed to Bolsonaro's successor, the left-wing Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote that he was "deeply concerned about the news of riots and vandalism".

"Traditat demokratike duhet të respektohen nga të gjithë. Ne ofrojmë mbështetjen tonë të plotë për autoritetet braziliane", tha Modi.

Në Evropë, kancelari gjerman Olaf Scholz tha më 9 janar se "sulmet e dhunshme ndaj institucioneve demokratike janë një sulm ndaj demokracisë që nuk mund të tolerohet" dhe se Berlini "qëndron me Presidentin Lula dhe brazilianët".

Presidentja e Komisionit Evropian Ursula von der Leyen postoi në Twitter dënimin e saj për "sulmin ndaj demokracisë në Brazil", ndërsa Presidenti i Këshillit Evropian Charles Michel shkroi se Lula ishte "i zgjedhur në mënyrë demokratike nga miliona brazilianë përmes zgjedhjeve të ndershme dhe të lira" dhe që patën mbështetjen e plotë të BE-së.
