Protesters in Brazil

Supporters of former far-right Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro have attacked Congress and the Supreme Court and surrounded the presidential palace.

The dramatic scenes come a week after Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took power.

The BBC reports that supporters of Bolsonaro, who refuse to accept that he lost the election, broke through police barriers in the capital, Brazil.

The police used tear gas, but failed to repel the demonstrators.

The protesters broke the windows, while others entered the Senate chamber. It is unclear if they are still in the building.

Bolsonaro's supporters are calling for military intervention and da Silva's resignation.

Many of them set up camps in cities across Brazil, some outside military barracks. This is because his most ardent supporters want the army to intervene and repeat the elections claiming that the October ones were stolen.

Lula da Silva is currently on an official trip to the state of Sao Paulo. In his speech at the inauguration ceremony, he vowed to rebuild the country. Lula da Silva condemned the policies of his predecessor, who went to the US to avoid the handover ceremony./ BA - CNA.al
