"Abolish roaming charges"/ EC proposes opening negotiations with

The European Union's Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has proposed opening talks with the Western Balkan countries on the abolition of roaming fees.

In a post on the "X" platform, Kos states that roaming fees are a problem throughout the Western Balkans region and should now be abolished just like in EU countries.

“Roaming charges are a problem across the Western Balkans. For cross-border workers and families calling loved ones abroad. Surprise bills while traveling are something we no longer accept in the EU. Today, we proposed to start talks to extend this to the Western Balkans ,” Kos’ post said.

Meanwhile, according to a European Commission announcement, once agreements are finalized with each of the partners and each of them is fully compliant with EU roaming rules, people traveling between the EU and the Western Balkans will be able to make calls, send text messages and use mobile data without additional roaming charges.

This means seamless connectivity at domestic rates not only for citizens and businesses from the Western Balkans visiting the EU, but also for EU travellers to the Western Balkans. The agreement will make it easier and more affordable for people and companies on both sides to stay in touch while abroad for study, work or holiday.

With the proposal for negotiating mandates adopted today, the Commission is seeking the Council's authorisation to open negotiations with the Western Balkans partners. Once approved by the Council, the Commission will negotiate bilateral agreements with each Western Balkans partner. When successfully concluded, these agreements will pave the way for the Western Balkans to become part of the EU's "Roam Like at Home" area. /CNA
