The Taliban reject the UN's request for women's rights

Responding to the United Nations Security Council's request for the removal of restrictions on women's rights in Afghanistan, the Taliban Government has said that it will not allow acts that violate Sharia Law.

"The Islamic Emirate seeks to regulate all issues related to Sharia Law," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement.

"Considering the responsibility it has towards the people and the religion, the Islamic Emirate cannot allow acts against Sharia within the state."

The Taliban spokesman has called on countries and international organizations to understand religious demands in Afghanistan's traditional society and not connect them with humanitarian aid and political issues.

On Friday, 11 countries called on the Taliban "to immediately reverse the oppressive measures against women and girls" in Afghanistan, including in the political, economic, education and public spaces.

After the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, hardline leaders have severely restricted women's rights and movement.

Currently, women and girls cannot be educated beyond the sixth grade, nor can they go to university.

Many jobs are now banned and they cannot travel long distances alone./ CNA.al
