Pioneering American broadcaster Barbara Walters has died at the age of 93 after a career that spanned half a century.

She was the first female anchor to join joined ABC News in 1976. Walters is the winner of 12 Emmy Awards.

"Barbara Walters passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones," publicist Cindi Berger said in a statement Friday night. She began her career in journalism in 1961 with NBC.

In 1974, she became the first female co-anchor of a US news program, on NBC's Today Show.

She broke records by becoming the first female news anchor.

During her long career she interviewed a long list of world leaders, including former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Cuban President Fidel Castro as well as Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin./ CNA. al
