USA/ Republicans fail to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives

For the first time in 100 years, lawmakers in the House of Representatives fail to elect the president in the first round of voting.

Republican Kevin McCarthy failed to secure the necessary votes to take the leadership of the House, as he was not supported by some of his colleagues.

He received 203 votes, fellow Republican Andy Biggs 10 votes and Democrat Heekm Jeffires 212 votes.

Kevin McCarthy became the first politician since 1923 not to be elected in the first round.

He has vowed to fight to the end.

The session in the House of Representatives is still ongoing, and although lawmakers have cast their votes once, they have the right to change them. Voting is expected to continue.

After the November 2022 elections, the Republicans regained control of the House of Representatives, but on the first day of its work, they failed to elect the Speaker of the House.

Without the election of the Speaker, the House of Representatives cannot carry out its activities.

Lawmakers are sworn in for their two-year mandate after the election of the president.

Mr. McCarthy's candidacy is opposed by a new generation of Republicans who support former President Donald Trump, who say he is not conservative enough and not tough enough to fight Democrats./VOA
