Russia again replaces the commander of the military forces in Ukraine
Commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, Valery Gerasimov

Russia has again replaced the commander of its forces in Ukraine, appointing to this position the former chief of the General Staff of the Russian army, Valery Gerasimov.

This was announced by the Russian Minister of Defense, Sergei Shoigu, in a statement on January 11.

Gerasimov replaces Sergei Surovik, who was appointed to the post on October 8. He was the first official to be appointed commander of all Russian forces on Ukrainian soil since February.

Within days of Surovikin taking over to oversee Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Moscow began cracking down on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

He was also in charge when Russian forces withdrew from the southern regional capital Kherson in November last year.

Surovikin will become one of Gerasimov's three deputies, and remains commander of the air force.

The other two deputies are army general Oleg Salyukov, who will serve as ground forces commander, and colonel general Alexei Kim, deputy chief of the General Staff.

Russian forces are currently engaged in intense fighting around the town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian ministry said earlier that Russian forces, including those of the Vagner mercenary group, have suffered "colossal losses" in the attempt to capture Soledar./ REL
