German police evict hundreds of climate protesters from abandoned town

German police on Thursday continued efforts to evacuate hundreds of climate protesters who have holed up in Luetzerath, with the aim of preventing the demolition of the town and the expansion of a coal mine.

Police launched the operation on Tuesday after a regional court decided on Monday to reject the latest legal action by protesters seeking a ban on the destruction of the town in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

A police spokesman told the AFP news agency that the operation "could last several weeks", and that another demonstration was expected to take place on Saturday. Public figures, such as Greta Thunberg, and other important activists were expected to participate in the demonstration, thus giving support to the protesters./VOA
