The use of Russian and Belarusian flags at the Australian Open is prohibited

Russian and Belarusian flags have been banned from the Australian Open tennis tournament following an on-court incident.

Initially, the spectators were allowed to use the flags, provided that they do not obstruct the game.

But the organizers changed this decision on Tuesday, after the fans were seen with a Russian flag in the competition between the Ukrainian tennis player, Kateryna Baindl and the Russian, Kamilla Rakhimova.

The ban came into effect immediately.

"We will continue to work with our players and fans to provide the best possible environment to enjoy tennis," the organizers said in a statement.

The Ukrainian fans called the police and security officials in the first round of the competition, claiming that the Russian fans "taunted" Baindli.

Russian and Belarusian athletes have been banned from competing with their countries' flags in some sports, including tennis, since Russia's war in Ukraine began in February last year.

Belarus, a neighboring country of Russia, has supported Moscow in the started war.

Currently, players from these countries are competing under a neutral flag in the tennis tournament in Australia./REL
