Global companies 'helping Myanmar produce weapons'

Myanmar's military is producing large quantities of weapons to use against its own people, thanks to supplies from companies in at least 13 countries, United Nations officials have said.

The United States, France, India and Japan are among the countries that have been named, despite Western sanctions aimed at isolating Myanmar, also known as Burma.

"Myanmar has never been attacked by a foreign state," said Yanghee Lee, former UN human rights rapporteur and one of the authors of the report.

"Also, Myanmar does not export weapons. Since 1950, this country has produced weapons to use against its own people.

The UN report said that domestically produced weapons are being used to commit atrocities against those who oppose the military.

Myanmar has been embroiled in violence since the February 2021 military coup.

Opponents of the coup have joined ethnic rebel groups to resist the military regime.

Officially, more than 2,600 people have been killed by the army since the last coup.

However, the real figure is believed to be 10 times higher./REL
