Japan and India begin joint warplane exercises

Japan and India began their first warplane exercises near Tokyo on Monday, as the countries step up defense and security amid concerns about China's military capabilities.

The 11-day exercises will involve eight Japanese fighter jets, four Indian fighter jets, two aircraft carriers and other heavy weapons, Japan's Defense Ministry said.

The two countries have reached an agreement for these exercises in 2019, but they have been postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Japan and India - along with Australia and the United States - are part of the "Quad" alliance, a group of regional powers that are increasingly concerned about China's influence in the region and the world.

In December last year, the Government of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged to double defense spending, as he considered China to be the "biggest strategic challenge ever" to Japan's security.

Last week, Japan signed a new agreement with Britain in the defense sector, as well as agreeing to expand the defense treaty it has with Washington./REL
