The court acquits the former Czech prime minister accused of theft
Former Prime Minister Andrej Babis

A court in Prague acquitted former Prime Minister Andrej Babis, who was accused of defrauding European Union subsidies in the amount of 2 million dollars.

The prosecution had requested a suspended sentence for 3 years and a fine of 440,000 dollars for the former prime minister and may appeal the court's decision.

Mr. Babis had declared that he was innocent and that the charges against him were raised for political purposes.

Mr. Babis himself was not present at the Prague Court on Monday. His former co-worker, Jana Nagyova, who signed the subsidy application, was also acquitted.

The court's decision appears to strengthen Mr. Babis's position just days before the first round of the Czech presidential election.

Mr. Babis, retired general Petr Pavl, former head of NATO's military committee, as well as the former rector of the university, Danuse Nerudova, are considered the main candidates in the elections to be held on Friday./ VOA
