Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Byalyatski went on trial in Belarus on Thursday, facing up to 12 years in prison in a case his allies see as political punishment for his human rights work.
The 60-year-old, who co-founded the human rights group Viasna, is one of hundreds of Belarusian activists jailed during the violent crackdown on anti-government protests that erupted in the summer of 2020.
"The accusations against our colleagues are related to their human rights activities, the provision of assistance by the human rights center 'Viasna' to victims of politically motivated persecution," the group said in a statement.
Mr. Byalyatski and his colleagues are considered "political prisoners" by other human rights activists. They say about 1,500 political prisoners are held in Belarus prisons.
According to them, since 2020, about 50,000 people have been arrested for participating in protests, or for criticizing the authorities./ VOA
