Czechs vote for the new president

The citizens of the Czech Republic are voting today in the presidential elections, to choose the successor of Miloš Zeman.

The position of president in the Czech Republic is considered ceremonial.

Billionaire Andrej Babish is among the eight candidates running for president.

The elections started on Friday and will end on Saturday afternoon.

Babish, the former prime minister, was acquitted this week in a fraud trial, a decision that boosted his chances of winning the first round of the presidential election.

If neither candidate wins a majority, the two candidates with the most votes will face off in a runoff in two weeks.

Retired military general Petr Pavel, 61, a former member of NATO's military committee, and former university chancellor Danushe Nerudova, 44, are Babis' main competitors.

Otherwise, Zeman has held two five-year terms in power.

His second, and final, term expires in March.

He was the first president to be elected by popular vote.

The other two former presidents, Vaclav Havel and Vaclav Klaus, were elected by the vote of the legislators./REL
