Demographic indicators have worsened significantly after the pandemic.

In addition to the unusual increase in additional deaths from Covid-19 during 2020 and 2021, births have strengthened the rates of decline and immigration has also increased.

Official data shows that births on a national scale in the first quarter of 2024 were 19.2% lower than in the same period of 2019.

The counties of Berat and Dibra had the largest drop in births in the period compared.

In the first quarter of 2024, only 164 babies were born in the district of Berat, with a decrease of 36.4% compared to the first quarter of 2019. In the same percentage, births also decreased in the district of Dibra, suggesting that these districts also had the largest population decline compared to others in the last 5 years.

On the other side, the counties with a more moderate decrease in births were Tirana and Shkodra with 6.6 and 13.7% each. The decline in births is the clearest indicator of the country's population decline. But the paradox lies in the district of Tirana, which, although it has a larger population during the transition from internal emigration, has declining births.

The district of Tirana seems not to have become attractive for the creation of new families. In the past, students who came to Tirana created families after their studies and did not return to the districts, but now young people stay in Tirana after their studies to prepare for emigration.

A survey on immigration conducted by INSTAT in 2019 showed that Tirana was the county with the largest percentage of family units that had emigrated between 2011 and 2019.

The data prove that from 12 counties in 11 of them, the number of births has decreased at double-digit rates between the first quarter of 2019 and 2024.

Data on births suggest that the resident population in the country has declined more than the official INSTAT data.

According to INSTAT, from 2019 to 2023, the general population has decreased by 3.5%, while births have decreased by 19.2%.

The data refer that in the first 3 months of 2024 the number of births was 5,056, marking a decrease of 6.8%, compared to the first quarter of 2023. Births in the first quarter of 2024 marked the lowest historical level based on quarterly at least since 1990./Monitor
