"Incrimination of the State Police"/ DP requests interpellation with

Klevis Balliu, on behalf of the DP, has filed a request for an interpellation with the Minister of Interior Besfort Lamallari in the Parliament.

The request was made in connection with serious concerns according to the DP about the level of incrimination and vulnerability of the State Police to corruption and the influence of organized crime.

"On behalf of the Democratic Party parliamentary group, I have submitted to the Assembly a request for an urgent interpellation with the Minister of Interior, regarding serious concerns about the level of incrimination and vulnerability of the State Police to corruption and the influence of organized crime.

Reports by international partners and prestigious international institutions have repeatedly emphasized that law enforcement structures in Albania remain exposed to corruption and criminal infiltration.

When criminal elements manage to infiltrate the structures tasked with fighting crime, this constitutes not only an institutional problem, but also a serious risk to national security and to the credibility of the Albanian state towards our international strategic partners.

In a functioning democracy, responsibility for the integrity and functioning of security institutions is also a political responsibility. For this reason, it is imperative that the government and the Ministry of Interior provide clear explanations on how the appointment, promotion and integrity control processes within the State Police have been managed.

Recent developments also raise serious questions about the effectiveness of the police integrity verification process, which was presented as an important reform to cleanse the police ranks of corruption and links to crime. This process has clearly failed.

Albania needs strong, professional and credible law enforcement institutions. The fight against organized crime and corruption is a shared priority of the Albanian state and our international partners, and this requires full transparency, institutional accountability and high standards of integrity.

For this reason, through this interpellation I request that the Minister of Interior appear before the Parliament and provide full explanations for this worrying situation. The incrimination of police structures is not a phenomenon that arises overnight. It is the result of a long process of institutional degradation, which cannot occur without a serious failure of control mechanisms and without accountability at the highest levels of management.

The Minister of Interior must explain why, despite constant warnings from international reports and numerous signals that have come to light in recent years, sufficient measures have not been taken to prevent this level of criminal infiltration into the State Police.

"The Albanian public has the right to know whether this situation is the result of institutional negligence and incompetence, or whether the lack of action and tolerance of these phenomena has come as a result of close cooperation between the government and organized crime for mutual monetary and electoral benefits," Balliu emphasizes./ CNA
