Albania's exit from the money laundering gray list / Key: Result of reforms

In October 2023, Albania left the gray list for money laundering.

This fact was mentioned in the annual report to the Law Commission by the Prosecutor General, Olsian Çela.

The latter said that Albania's exit from the gray list came as a result of reforms and policies implemented in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing.

He stated that in these areas there has been cooperation, transparency and very positive results of the prosecutions of the general jurisdiction in the investigation of money laundering.

"At the plenary session of the FATF, held on October 27, 2023 in Paris, Albania was decided to leave the list of jurisdictions under increased monitoring, known as the "grey list". This result has come, among other things, through the reforms and policies implemented in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, and especially as a result of the readiness for cooperation, the transparency shown and the very positive results of the general jurisdiction prosecutors in the investigation of money laundering. money. For this, Albania will no longer be subject to the increased monitoring of the FATF.

The result of these measures is the progress evidenced by the increase in effectiveness in the investigations for the criminal offenses of money laundering provided by articles 287 and 287/b of the Criminal Code. The statistical data of 2023 show that for the criminal offenses provided by articles 287 and 287/b of the Criminal Code, 158 new criminal proceedings and 15 defendants were registered, while 14 proceedings with 27 defendants were sent for trial and 22 defendants are convicted. In this period, only for the criminal offense of money laundering according to Article 287 of the Criminal Code, 156 new proceedings with 11 defendants were registered, and 11 proceedings with 16 defendants were sent for trial," Çela emphasized./ CNA
