The wealth of the Prime Minister/Edi Rama with unclear sources

Edi Rama has been the Prime Minister of Albania for 8 years, and is seeking a third term in office in the April 25 parliamentary elections. He has had a diverse career before getting involved in politics. He has been a professor of painting at the Academy of Arts, a member of the national basketball team, a publicist and the author of two books; “Reflections” together with Ardian Klosi, and “Scapegoat”.
Edi Rama’s involvement in public and political life, began with the movement of the 1990s that overthrew the communist regime in Albania, where he was one of the prominent public voices. After several years away from Albania, Rama entered politics as Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in the government of Prime Minister Fatos Nano in 1998.
He was elected mayor of Tirana in 2000, and ran the capital for 11 consecutive years. He was elected chairman of the Socialist Party in 2005, and has run it for 16 years. In the first statement submitted to the High Inspectorate of Declaration and Control of Assets and Conflict of Interest, HIDAACI in 2003, Rama declares assets worth 6 million Lek.
Meanwhile, until the end of 2018, family wealth has increased 16 times, reaching the value of 100 million Lek. At the end of 2018, Rama’s family wealth consists of 73 million Lek real estate, 17.2 million Lek bank liquidity, lending in the amount of 9.7 million Lek, vehicle worth 400.000 Lek, and 182.000 Lek in cash.
Family income for the reporting period are 94.3 million Lek, of which Edi Rama’s salary is 27 percent, and income from his wife’s work 38 percent. About 16 per cent of the income is from rent, 9.5 per cent from the artistic work and the sale of the book “Scapegoat” and 8 per cent is from the income created by the son from the sale of works of art.
But from the arithmetic and logical control of 14 years of declaration, one of the statements resulted in problems. After being elected Prime Minister, Rama and his wife re-declare their full wealth in October 2013, which increased by 44.736.099 Lek compared to 2011.
Meanwhile, the resources declared in the relevant sections are insufficient to cover the addition of assets in the amount of 29.641.593 Lek. The statistical analysis of assets made by the investigative network BIRN, also includes two loans declared by Linda Rama in 2010, in the amount of 30.000 euros and 40.000 euros. These loans are not declared to have been repaid by the end of 2018./CNA.al
